This is Akshay Kalbag. I subscribe to and read The Times of India on a regular basis. This is the top newspaper in India in terms of circulation figures. I've decided to write a letter to the newspaper’s editor as soon as I come across an attention-grabbing article. My letters to the editor will be published onto this blog, which I’ve specifically created for the purpose of keeping a permanent record of them (regardless of whether they are published in the newspaper or not).

Stop skipper speculations

First, Rahul Dravid resigned from the captaincy. Now, Sachin Tendulkar has refused the top job in Indian cricket (TOI, front page, November 7). Mahendra Singh Dhoni has done a commendable job leading Team India in the One-day Internationals and the Twenty20 format so far, and is also being groomed for the Test captaincy. The names of Sourav Ganguly, Anil Kumble and V.V.S. Laxman also figure in the list of ‘contenders’ for the most high-profile job in world cricket. The media must stop speculating about who the next Indian captain will be immediately and leave it to the selectors.

Akshay A. He is a player of the highest class. I am sure he will bounce back and be among the runs soon. He is a team man to the core and neither his talent nor his commitment to Team India can be questioned. The ignominy of having faced the axe will make the humble Karnataka batsman more eager to make a comeback and hungrier to hit a purple patch.

Now that the legendary Bangalorean has relieved himself of the high-profile and high-pressure job of being the Indian skipper, he will regain his form (and confidence) and perform well. If Dravid makes a comeback and scores consistently, he will also follow in the footsteps of a man who found himself in a similar situation not too long ago–Sourav Ganguly, who preceded him as captain.

Akshay A.
