He’ll bounce back

By dropping Rahul ‘the Wall’ Dravid from the Indian squad for the upcoming One-day Internationals against the touring Pakistani team owing to his woeful lack of form in the last couple of months, the selection committee chaired by former Indian captain Dilip Vengsarkar sent out a strong message to every player in the team that only the players who are fit and scoring runs and/or taking wickets consistently will be picked and nobody can take their places in the squad for granted.

However, Dravid best typifies the old cricketing adage that ‘form may be temporary, but class is permanent’. He is a player of the highest class. I am sure he will bounce back and be among the runs soon. He is a team man to the core and neither his talent nor his commitment to Team India can be questioned. The ignominy of having faced the axe will make the humble Karnataka batsman more eager to make a comeback and hungrier to hit a purple patch.

Now that the legendary Bangalorean has relieved himself of the high-profile and high-pressure job of being the Indian skipper, he will regain his form (and confidence) and perform well. If Dravid makes a comeback and scores consistently, he will also follow in the footsteps of a man who found himself in a similar situation not too long ago–Sourav Ganguly, who preceded him as captain.
